It was the site of the French-English battle for Guadeloupe, and also the site of the Guadeloupean anti-slavery uprising against led by Louis Delgrès. It was recognized as a historical monument in 1977.

This three-level municipal museum occupies an attractive 19th-century colonial building and is dedicated to the renowned poet and Nobel laureate Alexis Leger (1887–1975), better known as St-John Perse. The house offers a glimpse of a period Créole home and displays on Perse’s life and work.
